Since 1994, the Department of Transfusion Medicine has been established in Bangladesh Medical Hospital as a specialized clinical and laboratory service dedicated to ensuring the availability, safety, quality, and appropriate use of blood and blood components. The department provides comprehensive transfusion support through voluntary blood donor recruitment, donor selection and screening, blood collection, component preparation, processing, storage, and distribution of blood The department performs essential immune-hematological and transfusion-related investigations, including ABO and Rh (D) grouping, antibody screening and identification, compatibility testing, direct and indirect antiglobulin tests, and investigation of transfusion reactions. A strong emphasis is placed on patient safety through appropriate blood utilization, rational component therapy, quality assurance, infection prevention, and adherence to standard operating procedures and national/international transfusion guidelines.
