Exploring the Structure of the Human Body

The Department of Anatomy at Bangladesh Medical College (BMC) forms the foundation of medical education, providing comprehensive training in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology, and histology essential for understanding human body structure and function. Our expert faculty employs innovative teaching methodologies including cadaveric dissection, medical imaging correlation, and computer-assisted learning to prepare students for clinical practice.
Equipped with a state-of-the-art dissection hall, bone museums, plastinated specimens, and digital anatomy laboratories, we deliver hands-on anatomical education while contributing to forensic anatomy, surgical anatomy research, and body donation programs. The department plays a crucial role in training MBBS students, postgraduate residents, and allied health professionals while advancing anatomical sciences through research and clinical correlations.

Our Educational Programs

  • Gross Anatomy: Complete cadaveric dissection, regional anatomy, and surgical anatomy training.
  • Histology & Microscopic Anatomy: Tissue microscopy, cell structure identification, and virtual slide libraries.
  • Neuroanatomy: Brain dissection, cranial nerve studies, and neuroimaging correlation.
  • Embryology: Human developmental anatomy, congenital anomalies, and birth defect studies.
  • Imaging Anatomy: CT, MRI, and ultrasound correlation with anatomical structures.
  • Surface Anatomy: Clinical examination landmarks and palpation techniques.

We integrate traditional dissection with modern digital anatomy tools and 3D modeling for comprehensive anatomical education.

Facilities & Resources

  • Dissection Hall: Modern ventilation system, individual dissection tables, and preservation facilities for 100+ cadavers.
  • Bone & Joint Museum: Complete human skeleton collection, articulated models, and pathology specimens.
  • Histology Laboratory: Light microscopes, virtual microscopy stations, and tissue processing units.
  • Digital Anatomy Lab: 3D anatomy software, virtual dissection tables, and anatomical atlases.
  • Plastination Collection: Preserved anatomical specimens for permanent display and study.
  • Body Donation Program: Ethical body donation coordination and memorial services.

Our facilities maintain bio-safety standards and provide 24/7 access for student study and faculty research.

Teaching Methodologies

  • Problem-based learning (PBL) integrated anatomy sessions
  • Cadaveric prosection workshops and surgical anatomy demonstrations
  • Team-based dissection with peer teaching
  • Clinical anatomy correlations with surgical specialties
  • OSCE examinations for anatomical knowledge assessment
  • Virtual reality anatomy modules for complex structures

We employ blended learning approaches combining traditional dissection with digital tools and clinical correlations to enhance anatomical understanding and retention.

Research & Special Contributions

  • Morphometric studies of anatomical variations
  • Forensic anthropology and identification techniques
  • Embryological research on congenital malformations
  • Surgical anatomy for minimally invasive procedures
  • Neuroanatomical studies using MRI and DTI imaging
  • Anatomical education research and curriculum development

The department publishes in national and international anatomy journals and contributes to surgical training programs and anatomical society activities.

Body Donation & Ethical Practices

  • Voluntary body donation awareness campaigns
  • Memorial services for donor families
  • Ethical guidelines for cadaveric use in teaching
  • Consent documentation and donor registry maintenance
  • Respectful handling and dignified disposal practices
  • Collaboration with religious and community leaders

We maintain highest ethical standards in body donation programs and honor donor contributions through memorial plaques and family appreciation events.

Postgraduate & Continuing Education

  • MPhil and PhD programs in anatomical sciences
  • Diploma courses in medical education and dissection
  • Workshops on plastination and specimen preservation
  • Refresher courses for surgical anatomy
  • International exchange programs with anatomy departments
  • Certification in digital anatomy and 3D modeling

The department serves as a regional center for advanced anatomical training and collaborates with surgical specialties for procedure-specific anatomy workshops.
