It was founded in 1986 by a group of committed individuals known as the founder members, who were inspired to offer this nation's citizens high-quality medical education, research, and services at affordable prices. Banglasesh Medical Studies and Research Institute (BMSRI), a non-profit, non-political organization founded in 1984, is in charge of both the college and the hospital.
After considerable deliberation and discussion, Bangladesh Medical College was founded on April 13, 1986, fulfilling the original members' desire of creating a medical college and hospital with the goal of providing medical education.

Bangladesh Medical College started functioning from 24th April 1986. The University of Dhaka granted affiliation to the College on 10th May 1988. Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BM&DC) recognized the college in 1986. The 1st batch of students from the College appeared in the 1st professional MBBS under Dhaka University held in March 1990 after completing two years of the prescribed course of studies. The College has been listed in the World Health Organization (WHO), which entitles the graduates of BMC to be eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) of the United Kingdom. They are also eligible to take the United States Medical License Examination (USMLE).
