Mastering the World of Microorganisms
The Department of Microbiology at Bangladesh Medical College (BMC) is committed to combating infectious diseases through advanced diagnostic microbiology, infection control practices, and antimicrobial stewardship programs. Our expert team specializes in identifying and characterizing bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens using conventional and molecular techniques to guide appropriate treatment and prevent healthcare-associated infections.
We provide 24/7 microbiology services with rapid turnaround times for critical samples and participate in national antimicrobial resistance surveillance programs. Our department maintains NABL accreditation standards and follows WHO guidelines for laboratory biosafety and quality management. We collaborate with clinical departments to optimize antibiotic usage and reduce healthcare-associated infections through evidence-based practices. The department actively participates in national reference laboratory networks and contributes to WHO antimicrobial resistance global action plan initiatives. Our department serves as a referral center for complex microbiological investigations and supports regional public health laboratories.
Equipped with BSL-2 laboratories, automated culture systems, and molecular diagnostic platforms, we provide comprehensive microbiological services supporting clinical diagnosis, epidemiological surveillance, and public health initiatives. The department plays a pivotal role in training MBBS students, postgraduate residents, and laboratory personnel while contributing to antimicrobial resistance research and outbreak investigations in Bangladesh.
