Mastering the World of Microorganisms

The Department of Microbiology at Bangladesh Medical College (BMC) is committed to combating infectious diseases through advanced diagnostic microbiology, infection control practices, and antimicrobial stewardship programs. Our expert team specializes in identifying and characterizing bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens using conventional and molecular techniques to guide appropriate treatment and prevent healthcare-associated infections.
Equipped with BSL-2 laboratories, automated culture systems, and molecular diagnostic platforms, we provide comprehensive microbiological services supporting clinical diagnosis, epidemiological surveillance, and public health initiatives. The department plays a pivotal role in training MBBS students, postgraduate residents, and laboratory personnel while contributing to antimicrobial resistance research and outbreak investigations in Bangladesh.

Our Services

  • Bacteriology: Culture and sensitivity testing, identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, TB culture and DST.
  • Virology: Viral antigen detection, serology for hepatitis, HIV, dengue, and respiratory viruses.
  • Mycology: Fungal cultures, identification of Candida, Aspergillus, and Cryptococcus species.
  • Parasitology: Stool examination, blood parasites, malaria diagnosis, and parasite identification.
  • Serology & Immunology: ELISA, rapid tests, and antibody detection for infectious diseases.
  • Molecular Diagnostics: PCR for TB, COVID-19, HPV, and multiplex respiratory panels.
  • Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: MIC determination, ESBL detection, and MRSA screening.

We provide 24/7 microbiology services with rapid turnaround times for critical samples and participate in national antimicrobial resistance surveillance programs.

Specialized Diagnostic Capabilities

  • Tuberculosis Laboratory: MGIT culture, GeneXpert MTB/RIF, and drug susceptibility testing.
  • BSL-2 Containment:** Advanced pathogen handling for high-risk organisms.
  • Automated Systems: VITEK 2 for bacterial identification and AST, blood culture systems.
  • Outbreak Investigation:** Contact tracing, environmental sampling, and epidemic intelligence.
  • Infection Control Support: Surveillance cultures, environmental monitoring, and sterilization validation.
  • Water & Food Microbiology: Quality testing for hospital water systems and food safety.

Our department maintains NABL accreditation standards and follows WHO guidelines for laboratory biosafety and quality management.

Infection Prevention & Antimicrobial Stewardship

  • Hospital Infection Control Committee membership and surveillance
  • Antimicrobial stewardship program implementation
  • Outbreak investigation and containment strategies
  • Vaccination program monitoring and serological surveys
  • Hand hygiene audits and compliance monitoring
  • Device-associated infection surveillance (CAUTI, CLABSI)

We collaborate with clinical departments to optimize antibiotic usage and reduce healthcare-associated infections through evidence-based practices.

Educational & Research Contributions

  • MBBS training in medical microbiology and infectious diseases
  • MD Microbiology postgraduate residency program
  • Workshops on biosafety, molecular techniques, and AST methods
  • Research on antimicrobial resistance patterns in Bangladesh
  • National surveillance for emerging infectious diseases
  • Publication of local antibiotic guidelines and susceptibility data

The department actively participates in national reference laboratory networks and contributes to WHO antimicrobial resistance global action plan initiatives.

Public Health Initiatives

  • Dengue surveillance and early warning systems
  • National TB elimination program support
  • Antimicrobial resistance awareness campaigns
  • Waterborne disease outbreak investigations
  • Food safety monitoring for institutional catering
  • Vector control program evaluation

Our department serves as a referral center for complex microbiological investigations and supports regional public health laboratories.
