Since 1990, the Department of Psychiatry at Bangladesh Medical College has been committed to providing undergraduate medical students with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify common psychiatric disorders and appropriately manage or refer patients with various mental health conditions.

Bangladesh Medical College is one of the few private medical institutions that additionally provides training facilities for postgraduate training in psychiatry. The department offers a wide range of inpatient services for psychiatric patients and has a strong record of providing effective treatment and ensuring safe and responsible discharge of patients.

This Department has also contributed significantly to the development of medical education by producing graduates who have subsequently become faculty members at renowned medical institutions, like Bangladesh Medical University and Chittagong Medical College. Many former graduates of Bangladesh Medical College have also pursued careers in psychiatry and now provide mental healthcare services in different corners of the world, including England and New Zealand.

Department Mission/Objectives

• To equip undergraduate medical students with the necessary knowledge and skills to recognize common psychiatric disorders and appropriately refer patients for specialist psychiatric care.
• To ensure that undergraduate medical students acquire the appropriate level of knowledge regarding commonly used psychotropic medications, including the indications, therapeutic effects, adverse effects and essential precautions.

• Classes for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students
• Outpatient Department for treatment of generally compliant patients, additionally providing necessary training to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.
• Indoor Psychiatry Ward to provide adequate treatment for certain groups of psychiatric patients who require hospitalization, and to additionally provide relevant clinical experience to undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychiatry.
